Maintenance Worker Practice Test

The function of a sump pump is primarily to remove water from basements and prevent flooding. Sump pumps are typically installed in the lowest part of a basement or crawl space to collect excess water that may accumulate due to heavy rains, melting snow, or groundwater. When the water level rises to a certain point, the sump pump is activated, pumping the water out of the basement and directing it away from the foundation of the house. This prevents not only water damage but also the potential growth of mold and mildew, preserving the integrity of the home’s structure and air quality.

In contrast, the other options address different systems unrelated to the primary function of a sump pump. Circulating air is managed by HVAC systems, heating is controlled by heating systems, and filtering drinking water is the role of water treatment or filtration systems. Each of these other functions does not pertain to the responsibilities of a sump pump.
